Description: 

Glossy green lobed leaves with soft spines at the tips. Purple flowers on spikes in late spring. Does not do well in the heat and humidity of the south. Clump-forming. Well-drained soil. Can spread aggressively.

History: 

Published in Sp. Pl. 2: 639 in 1753.

Native to France, Spain, Italy, Malta, Croatia, Syria, Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia.
