Description: 

Glossy green leaves, to 10", deeper cut than Acanthus mollis and more spiny. Pink to mauve flowers in late spring through mid-summer. More cold hardy and more tolerant of heat and humidity than Acanthus mollis. Tolerates a range of soils but prefers well-drained. Can spread aggressively.

History: 

Published in Sp. Pl. 2: 639 in 1753.

Native to Albania, Bulgaria, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Turkey and Algeria.
