Description: 

Soft green leaves with yellow and red in autumn. Red flowers with yellow anthers before the leaves in late winter to early spring, in drooping clusters. Moist well-drained soil, sheltered from cold winds.

Cultivars: 

'Green Cascade' - weeping, deeply cut foliage, good autumn color, cultivated since 1955.

'Vitifolium' - large, broad leaves with 10 to 12 lobes, to 6" across, good autumn color, cultivated since 1882, RHS Award of garden merit 2002, First Class Certificate for autumn foliage in 1974.

Published in Syst. Veg. (ed. 14) 911 in 1784.

Native to Japan. Introduced in 1864.
