My Experience:

I purchased a 3-gallon plant from Lowes in spring 2007 and potted it up to a larger container until it was planted in the ground in summer 2009. It started growing in the pot and continued in the ground, gaining around 3' by summer 2010. Beautiful spring appearance, purple-red, but suffers from the heat and sun throughout the summer. I potted it up again in late summer 2010 to use the space for a better tree.
