Description: 

Achnatherum species prefer good summer sun but cool nights and low humidity.

Sunny dry sites. Very upright. Inflorescences to 2' long with large spikelets to 1" long. Clumping cool season grass.

History: 

Native to southern California and Baja California.

Published in Phytologia 74: 6 in 1993.

Basionym Stipa coronata Thurb.

Accepted by ARS-Grin and ITIS but not PlantList or Tropicos.

This genus was once defined very broadly and included many diverse species. Taxonomic research now supports a narrower view of Stipa and has resulted in transfers of many species to other general, including Achnatherum, Austrostipa, Hesperostipa, and Nassella. Darke.
