Description: 

Attractive, glossy, green, leathery lobed (3 to 5) foliage and flowers shaped like a monkshood. Dense panicles of flowers, deep purple inside and pale blue outside. Deer tolerant and rabbit resistant (Oudolf). Moist well-drained soil. Afternoon shade in warmer zones. All parts are poisonous.

Cultivars: 

Oudolf lists var. wilsonii - one of first perennials to appear but flowers late in September to October, purple blue flowers, never flops
