Published in: Sp. Pl. 1: 344. 1753.

Other: Lectotype: A. hippocastanum L (Ill. Fl. N. U.S. (Britton & Brown), ed. 2 2: 498. 1913). Synonym: Hippocastanum Mill. 'Aesculus' was the Latin name for an oak with edible acorns but Linnaeus chose it for this genus. Also placed in Hippocastanaceae.
