Description: 

ID: alternate, bipinnately compound, coarse serrate leaves, red stem/petiole, tendrils, dark fruit. Considered a pest by some, an aggressive grower and seldom cultivated. Tiny green flowers in June to July followed by berries that start pale and deepen in color to a dark purple.

History: 

Published in Deut. Dendrol. 400 in 1893. Native to eastern and central US including South Carolina and Georgia, and Mexico. Basionym is Vitis arborea L. published in 1753.

'Arborea' probably refers to its habit of climbing trees.
