Aristolochia L.

Common Name: Dutchman’s Pipe, Snakeroot, Birthwort

Family: Aristolochiaceae

Published in: Sp. Pl. 2: 960. 1753.

Other: Lectotype: A. rotunda L. (Ill. Fl. N. U.S. (Britton & Brown), ed. 2 1: 645. 1913). Greek 'aristos' = best, 'lochia' = childbirth - because the curved form of the flower resembles the form of the human foetus when in the right position for birth.
