Description: 

Foliage has red or purple color but more green if in shade. Autumn color is deeper purple.

Cultivars: 

'Helmond Pillar' - upright form to 4' tall and wide - not really a pillar.

History: 

First published in Rev. Hort. (Paris) 98: 307 in 1926.

...the original plant arose in the nursery of Renault in Orleans, France about 1913, but it was not distributed until 1926. (Dirr)

'Atropurpurea' = dark purple

Now considered a synonym of Berberis thunbergii DC.
