Description: 

Woody vines with spines. The flower bracts are colorful. Blooms in winter. Jim Wilson recommends keeping the plant a little pot-bound for the first year, feeding monthly with a fertilizer for flowers but not when in bloom, pinch the tips to encourage blooming, when potting up, disturb the roots as little as possible.

History: 

Discovered by Admiral Louis de Bougainville in 1768 in Brazil.
