Sargent in Silva (Sargent) 6: 77 in 1894 says The Strong Back was first described in the Natural History of Carolina by Mark Catesby, who discovered it on the Bahama Islands... See Volume II plate 79.

History: 

Native to Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Published in Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist. ser. 4: 3 (15): 203 in 1869.

Much taxonomic confusion. USDA show B. ovata Miers as a synonym of Bourreria succulenta Jacq. which PlantList shows as a synonym of Bourreria baccata Raf.
