Cool season grass. Clumping foliage (semi-evergreen) with tall stems topped with multi-branched, nodding, heart-shaped inflorescences in late spring. Inflorescences start purple green and fade to beige. Blue-green leaves. Well-drained soil.

Native to Europe. Many common names.

Published in Sp. Pl. 1: 70 in 1753.
