Description: 

At first they look like large pink eggs coming from the ground, then the stem elongates and is topped with a bright red spherical flower head to 20" diameter. Leaves appear after the flower stalks have died back. They lie flat on the ground and are tongue-shaped.

History: 

Published in Topogr. Verz. Pflanzensamml. Ecklon 7 in 1827.

Basionym Amaryllis orientalis L. also published in Pl. Rar. Hort. Schoenbr. 1: 38 t. 74 in 1797.

Native to South Africa.
