The leaves are almost white with green speckles and pink petioles. Striking! Probably not much berry production but as Ted says, "Who cares?" He also says not to fertilize it late in the season.
Ted Stephens of Nurseries Caroliniana acquired this plant from a nursery in Osaka, Japan. There is a specimen at the JC Raulston Arboretum. In winter 2011 I found it on the website for Garden Debut under the trademarked name 'Wine Spritzer'.
I purchased a 1-gallon plant at Nurseries Caroliniana in May 2011 and planted it behind the garage. It was not robust and barely grew in the season. Despite - or maybe because of - a warm winter, it did not return in spring. I love it so much that I bought another and am going to keep it in a pot until it is large enough to take cuttings from.
