History: 

Published in Hereditas (Lund) 40: 388 in 1954.

Basionym Calamagrostis purpurascens var. ophitidis J.T.Howell.

Native to California where it grows in serpentine soil which is soil derived from weathered serpentinite rock and is very low in essential nutrients.
