Description: 

Alternate, pinnately compound leaves with 5 to 7 leaflets, to 12" long, yellowish-green, sharply toothed. Nut to 1.25" diameter, round. The nut splits at the base when ready. Large taproot makes transplanting hard.

History: 

Published in Hort. Brit. (Sweet) 97 in 1826.

Basionym Juglans glabra Mill.

Native to eastern Canada and eastern and central US.

Introduced to cultivation in 1799.

RHS Award of merit in 1989.
