Description: 

Alternate leaves to 6" long with coarsely toothed margin, white tomentose below when young. Small bur coverered with sharp spines to 1.5" diameter, containing a chestnut. Suckers. Large shrub to small tree. Drought tolerant once established.

History: 

Published in Gard. Dict., ed. 8 #2 in 1768.

Basionym Fagus pumila L. - Linnaeaus cites Catesby's Natural History Volume 1 Plate 9.

Native to eastern and southern USA.

Introduced to cultivation in 1699.
