Description: 

Leaves whorled or opposite, to 8", malodorous when crushed. Flowers in panicles of white, bell-shaped in summer. Coarse form, short thick trunk with irregular crown.

Cultivars: 

'Aurea' - golden yellow leaves becoming light yellow-green in summer, white flowers marked orange and purple in panicles, RHS Award of Garden Merit, 1993.

History: 

Native from Florida to New England.

Published in Fl. Carol. (Walter) 64 in 1788.

Synonum Bignonia catalpa L. - Lectotype = "Bignonia Urucu foliis flore sordide albo, intus maculis purpureis & luteis asperso, siliqua longissima & angustissima" in Catesby's Natural History Volume I Plate 49.
