Description: 

Alternate, leathery leaves to 4" long, pointed oval shape, green, glabrous above and below. Flowers on round heads on panicles followed by cone-like fruit to 1" diameter.

History: 

Published in Sp. Pl. 1: 176 in 1753.

Lectotype = "Alni fructu, laurifolia arbor maritima" in Sloane, Voy. Jamaica, 2: 18, t. 161, f. 2, 1725.

Catesby refers to Sloane in the description and drawing in Natural History of Carolina... Volume II Plate 33. Catesby cited in Sp. Pl., ed. 4 1(2): 995 in 1797, Syst. Veg. (ed. 14) 217 in 1784.

Native to Florida and the Caribbean.
