Description: 

Densely pubescent young shoots. Leaves are glaucous, alternate, 2 to 4" long and almost as wide. New growth is purplish changing to dark blue-green, pubsecent below. Flowers in racemes to 6" long, yellow petals and purple anthers, in March to April. Light shade in the South. Medium moisture, well-drained soil, not unamended heavy clay. Prune immediately after flowering.

History: 

Native to Japan. Introduced in 1860 by Robert Fortune (US 1863).

Published in Fl. Jap. (Siebold) 1: 45 in 1838.
