Rounded form overall, shrubby or small tree, often multi-trunked. Leaves are alternate, almost round, 1.5 to 3.5" long, entire. Parallel veins are clearly visible. Long petiole makes the leaves stand off from the branches. Blooms are airy, smoky (hence the name) on current season's growth in late spring, often lasting through the summer. Drought tolerant once established.



Native to central and southern Europe to the Himalayas and China. Introduced to cultivation in 1656.
