Description: 

Evergreen perennial. The rosette foliage looks good in winter with the large, bold silvery-grey color. Purple thistle-like flowers in summer. After flowering the plants die back to the ground and then begin to grow again. Prefers well-drained soil and needs a protected location in lower zones. Deer resistant.

Native to Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Spain, Albania, Croatia, Greece, Italy, France and Portugal.

Published in Sp. Pl. 2: 827 in 1753.

My Experience: 

I purchased a 1-gallon plant at Goodness Grows in October 2012 and planted it in the Pool Lawn Border. It struggled and tried to return several times but the ice storm finished it off.
