Description: 

Pink to purple flowers with dark veins. They have a pouch which looks like a partially inflated balloon. Two leaves from the rhizome, to 10" long, 6" wide. One flower per stem in spring to summer. Acid soil.

History: 

Native to Eastern USA (not Florida) and Canada.

Introduced in 1786 by William Hamilton to the UK.

Published in Hortus Kew. 3: 303 in 1789.
