Description: 

Leaves opposite, stems 4-sided, green. Small flowers that produce fruit which look like strawberries in September to October. As they ripen they burst open to show bright red seeds. Some autumn color (red). Susceptible to Euonymus scale. Susceptible to deer and rabbits.

History: 

Published in Sp. Pl. 1: 197 in 1753.

Native to the eastern US from Florida to New York and introduced to cultivation in 1683.
