Description: 

Leaves opposite, compound, to 15", 5 to 9 leaflets. Broad rounded head. Good autumn color. Moist well-drained soil preferred.

History: 

Native to east Canada and eastern and central US.

Introduced to cultivation in 1724.

Published in Sp. Pl. 2: 1057 in 1753.

Linnaeus cited Catseby's Natural History Volume I plate 80 and again in Sp. Pl., ed. 2 2: 1510 in 1763 but Willdenow cited Catesby Volume I plate 80 under Fraxinus caroliniana and not under F. americana in [pub:/SpP4 Sp. Pl., ed. 4] 4: 2: 1103 to 4 in 1805.
