Description: 

Purple flowers in summer.

Gentian with bell-shaped blossoms, 6-7 cleft, deep purple, dotted and whorled; empalement skinny, almost sheathed, and appearing cut off at the ends. (Bot. Repos.)

History: 

Published in Sp. Pl. 1: 227 in 1753.

Native to the Norway, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France.

Also published in Bot. Repos. 2: 117 in 1800: ...a native of the Helvetian Alps... This plant is said, in the Hort. Kew. to have been introduced in the year 1768 by Professor de Saussure...
