Hippeastrum sp.

Family: Amaryllidaceae

Genus: Hippeastrum

Category: Bulb

Zones: 8 to 11

Size: To 2' tall in bloom

Exposure: Sun

Bulbs like well-drained soil and full sun. Plant with an inch of the bulb above the soil surface. Bloom in spring in the ground. Cut off spent blooms but not leaves, let them die naturally. Evergreen in warm zones. In colder zones mulch well in winter.

In pots they like to be crowded and they must drain well. After blooming make sure the plants get plenty of sun for the leaves. Put in a dark dry place for 10 to 12 weeks in autumn and then repot and they ail bloom again.

My Experience:

I have a number of bulbs planted in the cutting garden and in the Pool Lawn Border.
