Family: Amaryllidaceae

Genus: Hymenocallis

Category: Bulb

Zones: 5 to 8

Size: To 2' tall, spread 18"

Exposure: Sun, Filtered Sun, Part Shade

Description:

White flowers with a daffodil-like center in summer. Strap-like leaves. Medium to wet soils. My experience suggests that a width of 3' for a large clump is more accurate.

History:

Native to Southeast USA + some Mid-West.

Published in Appendix (Herbert) 44 in 1821.

Basionym is Pancratium carolinianum L. for which the lectotype is "Lilio-Narcissus Polianthus, flore albo" in Catesby's Natural History Appendix Plate 5 in 1747.

PlantList and the Linnaean Typification Project consider Hymenocallis caroliniana to be a synonym of Pancratium maritimum L. but in the trade, it is still sold separately as a distinct species.
