Description: 

Leaves simple, glossy, dark green and wavy with many spines. Females produce red berries but need a male of the same species for best fruit set. Slow growing in hotter climates.

Cultivars: 

'J.C van Rol' - dark green leaves, almost spineless, lots of berries, self-pollinating

'Ferox' - hedgehog holly, male so no berries, small very spiny leaves, slow growing

'Argentea Marginata' - dark green leaves edged with cream white, pyramidal, red berries

History: 

First published in Sp. Pl. 1: 125 in 1753.

Native to northern Africa, Europe and the UK, and western Asia.

RHS Award of Garden Merit 2002.
