Description: 

Leaves are alternate, dark green and lustrous, to 4" long, wavy margins. Greenish-white flowers in spring. Moist, well-drained soil.

Cultivars: 

'Deep Purple' - purple new growth ages to dark green, white flowers - introduced by Hawksridge Nursery.

History: 

Native to Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Introduced in 1790.

Published in Syst. Nat., ed. 10 1050 in 1759.

RHS Award of merit in 1930.
