Description: 

Upright shrub. Leathery, smooth, shiny leaves to 6" long and 2" wide. Anise fragrance when crushed. Red flowers, strap-like with yellow centers in spring.

History: 

Native to the southeastern US. Discovered by John Bartram in Florida in 1766 and introduced in 1771.
