Description: 

Grown primarily for foliage. Species has pale pink trumpet-shaped flowers. Ornamentals rarely flower. Varieties grown for bright green or purple foliage. Annual in most regions. Tubers can be dug in fall and stored in dry media in a cool dry place.

History: 

Published in Encycl. (J. Lamarck et al.) 6(1): 14 in 1804.

Basionym is Convolvulus batatas L. - Linnaeus cites Catesby's Natural History Volume II plate 60.

Native to the east and south coast US.
