Twining annual vine. Leaves vary in shape but usually heart-shaped. Red to orange flowers. Found in moist sites - weedy.

History: 

Published in Syst. Nat., ed. 10 2: 925 in 1759.

Native to the souteastern US (Texas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi) and South America.

Synonym = Ipomoea sanguinea Vahl. Listed in Bot. Reg. 1: 9 (1815).
