Alternate, compound leaves to 24" with 15 to 23 leaflets. Green fruit to 2" diameter, edible nuts. Spreading open form. Difficult to transplant because of its tap root. Prefers moist well-drained soil.
Native to eastern and central US and east Canada.
Introduced to cultivation in 1686.
