Description: 

Conical form typically. Species not often found in cultivation. Foliage can be juvenile (awl or needle-like) and/or adult (scale-like). Females have berry-like cones and males produce catkin-like pollen cones. Likes well-drained soil.

Cultivars: 

Many different shapes and sizes. Some not hardy in zone 3.

'Gold Coast' - zones 4 to 8, 3' tall and 5' wide, gold, lacy leaves, introduced by Monrovia, avoid wet sites.

History: 

Native to China, Japan, the Himalayas and Mongolia.

Published in Mant. Pl. 127 in 1767.
