Description: 

Leaves alternate, to 4" long, thick, shiny, dark green, purple tint in autumn. Flowers in clusters, white, in spring. Vase-shape. Well-drained soil, medium moisture.

Basionym Andromeda axillaris Lam.

Native to the southeastern US.

Reveal (2009) lists the "flowering branch" of Catesby's Natural History Volume II plate 30 as "unidentified" but says the "fruiting branch" is L. axillaris.

Reveal (2009) also identifies Catesby's Natural History Volume II plate 52 as L. axillaris.
