Published in J. S. African Bot. 33: 141 in 1967.

Basionym Protea arcuata Lam.

Synonyms Leucadendron spathulatum R.Br., Protea crassulifolia Salisb. ex Knight, Leucadendron crassulifolium (Salisb. ex Knight) I.Williams, Leucadendron crassifolium R.Br.

ProteaWorldOnline also lists synonyms Leucadendron squarrosum R.Br. and Protea mutica Poir. However L. squarrosa is shown as a synonym of Leucadendron strobilinum (L.) Druce. by Linn Typif., PlantList and African Plant Database. One explanation is that Brown's L. squarrosum is a mixture, the male plants being L. arcuata and the female L. strobilina.
