Description: 

Small plant with purple to brown flowers in spring on a terminal raceme to 3" long, up to 30 flowers on each. Papery sheathing around the bulb. Basal foliage, 2 or 3 leaves per plant, shiny, elliptical. Likes moist, well-drained soil.

History: 

Published in Bot. Reg. 11: 882 in 1825.

Native to the eastern and central US and Ontario, Canada.
