Family: Meliaceae

Genus: Melia

Parent: Melia azedarach

Category: Tree - Deciduous

Zones: 7 to 9

Size: 20 to 30' tall and wide

Growth Rate: Fast

Exposure: Sun, Filtered Sun, Part Shade

Description:

Foliage is speckled with white/cream and light green. Very pretty specimen at Nurseries Caroliniana and Ted Stephens says that the seed have not germinated there - possibly winter cold is killing the seed. Dirr says his tree reverted to green and that seedlings in Texas came true-to-type.

History:

From JC Raulston Arboretum (Dirr).

My Experience:

I purchased a 1-gallon plant from Nurseries Caroliniana in August 2009 and planted it in the back garden. It was little more than a stick with a mophead of leaves and when the leaves fell there was just a stick. One year later the trunk was 3" diameter with 5 main branches. The deer stripped a lot of bark from the branches in October but it has recovered and bloomed for the first time in spring 2011.
