Description: 

Pyramidal in youth, developing a small crown. Leaves in 2s, (sometimes 3s) 3 to 5" long, blue-green. Cones to 2.5" long, clustered, often remaining after the seeds are shed.

History: 

Native to the eastern US, Texas and Oklahoma.

Published in Gard. Dict. ed. 8 12 in 1768.

Synonym is Pinus variabilis (Aiton]) Lamb. - also published in Desc. Pinus The native situation of P. variabilis is the sea-shore of North America, or at no great distance from it, in a sandy, but mixed kind of soil.
