Published in Hort. Kew. 3: 370 in 1789. Also published in Desc. Pinus 1: t.27 p.41 #21 in 1803 (and in ed.3 #33 in 1832) P. nigra grows wild only in New England, Canada, Nova Scotia, and the colder climates northward.

Synonym of Picea mariana (Mill.) Britton Sterns & Poggenb.
