Pinus occidentalis Sw.

Hispaniola Pine, West Indian Pine

Family: Pinaceae

Genus: Pinus

Category: Tree - Evergreen

Size: 60 to 100' tall

Description:

Open crown. Leaves are thin, 6 to 8" long in 5s, dark green. Cones are 3" long with swollen scales at the upper ends.

History:

Native to the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Published in Prodr. (Swartz) 103 in 1788. Also published in Desc. Pinus 1: p.36 #18 in 1803 (and in ed.3 #22 in 1832) Dr. Swartz seems only to have seen trees of this species without male flowers or fruit, and could only procure a branch with leaves, and a cone very much mutilated; it therefore still remains to be better described by some future Botanist who may be more fortunate.
