Description: 

Leaves alternate, 3 to 5 lobes, to 9" diameter. White mottled bark. Yellow to brown autumn color. Spreading open crown. Prefers moist, well-drained soil.

History: 

Published in Sp. Pl. 2: 999 in 1753. Linnaeus refers to Catesby's Natural History Volume I Plate 56.

Native to eastern Canada and eastern and central US.

Introduced to cultivation in 1636.
