Native to South Africa.

ProteaWorldOnline lists the following synonyms:

Protea coccinea R.Br., Erodendrum obtusum Salisb. ex Knight, Protea obtusa Sweet, Protea rangiferina Hort. ex Schult., 'speciosa Gawl 1801', Protea villifera Lindl.

That would make Protea speciosa var. latifolia Andrews a synonym also.
