Most of cultivars are much smaller growing than the species.

More shade in hot climates.


'Rotundifolia' - shorter, round leaves, good for clipping and hence hedges

'Marble Dragon' - glossy green and gold variegated leaves

'Otto Luyken' - showy upright spikes of flowers but attacked by shot-hole virus, compact form

'Marbled White' ('Variegata', 'Castlewellan') - grey-green leaves with white marbling, dense shrub

'Schipkaensis' - 4 to 5' tall and 6 to 8' wide - discovered in 1889 at the Shipka Pass at 4000' in Bulgaria. Zone 5 to 8.

Native to Europe and temperate Asia.

I saw the cultivar 'Schipaensis' at the Clemson Botanical Garden.
