Description: 

Small tree or large shrub. White flowers in spring, fragrant, in clusters to 6" long. Followed by black berries in summer. Plants will sucker and form colonies.

History: 

Published in Sp. Pl. 1: 473 in 1753. Reference is made to Catesby's Natural History Volume I Plate 28.

Native to Canada and the US.

Introduced to cultivation in 1724.
