Description: 

Leaves triangular to 3-lobed, to 7" long. Low, slow-growing habit. Deeply cracked, dark bark.

History: 

Native to central and eastern US.

Introduced to cultivation in 1739.

Published in Hausvater 5: 253 in 1770. Lectotype = Catesby's Natural History Volume I Plate 19 (1730).
