History: 

Native to the Carolinas.

Published in Bot. Repos. 1: 36 in 1798. It is to the industrious researches of J. Frasier, nurseryman, of the King's Road, Chelsea, we are indebted for this charming species of Rhododendron, who introduced it in the year 1792 from the back settlements of Carolina, North America, where it is native.

ARS-GRIN shows it as a synonym of Rhododendron minus Michx. but

PlantList shows it and R. minus as unresolved.

From Bot. Reg. The species is native of the mountains of Carolina.
