Published in Phytologia 77: 287 in 1995.

Basionym Aster novi-belgii L. and widely grown and sold still under this name.

Native to Canada and the US.

Named because New York was once known as New Belgium.

The common name Michaelmas Daisy is used in England because they flower around September 29th which is Michaelmas Day (the day of St. Michael and All Angels).
